A few months ago, I stumbled across a tweet from Tony Dihn, the creator of multiple successful indie products, ranging from $5k to $30k in monthly recurring revenue (MRR). One of his projects, Xnapper, is a simple screenshot application for Mac that has gone on to generate $6k in monthly revenue. From what I remember, Tony's tweet said something like this: "If you build Mac apps, you don't need a backend or hosted frontend - you can focus more on marketing and less on complexity." While there are certainly some drawbacks to this approach, it seems to be a viable strategy for indie hackers to build successful businesses. This week, I had the opportunity to explore some of the successful Mac apps in our database!

MacWhisper (~$100,000 in revenue)

The idea behind MacWhisper is to make audio transcription simpler using Mac OS. This application, which has been downloaded 57,574 times and is distributed through Gumroad, is based on OpenAI's Whisper and Whisper.ccp. AI wrappers are gaining a lot of traction, with BoltAI generating $3k in monthly revenue and PDF Pals generating $2k. The concept is straightforward: build a wrapper for OpenAI as a Mac app, enable users to use their own OpenAI keys, offer lifetime licences, and you're set. Just yesterday, I read a fascinating story from Alyssa X – she taught herself to create Mac OS apps and successfully generated $5,000 in revenue within the first week!

Liinks ($20,000 MRR)

I was astounded to learn that an online bio link tool can generate $20k in MRR. This product could easily reach $100k in MRR and the market size is practically limitless. If an idea is executed well, you can get rich off of a relatively simple product. What's even better is that this idea won't be threatened by direct competition; there is enough room for everyone. In other words, any player with an "ok product" can generate enough revenue. Just think of the founder, who may already be a millionaire: if they choose to sell Liinks, they could easily get $1M+ for their product. I firmly believe that this is an amazing market with incredible potential and a fantastic product.

Angelmatch ($5,100 MRR)

Angelmatch is a database of investors that you can use to build a list of potential investors and export them as a CSV file to contact them. The same founder has another tool called Investor Hunt, which is a similar product with a slightly different target audience and is generating around $2,500 in MRR. If you're not a coder, or even if you are, you should consider starting a Data as a Service business. I find Data as a Service businesses incredibly fascinating; you don't need many skills to start one. For example, Alex West runs Cyberleads, which delivers potential clients to agency owners' inboxes weekly and is currently generating $500k/year in revenue.

Spell.so: Spell.so is an AI and agent powered subscription platform, launched in February 2023 and has an MRR of 2,500 USD.

MacWhisper: MacWhisper is a one-time purchase AI and Speech Recognition product, launched in January 2023 and has a total revenue of 100,000 USD.

BoltAi: BoltAi is a lifetime subscription AI, ChatGPT, and Mac platform, launched in May 2023 and has a MRR of 3,839 USD.

PDF Pals: PDF Pals is a lifetime subscription AI, ChatGPT, and Mac platform, launched in May 2023 and has a MRR of 2,264 USD.

Investor Hunt: Investor Hunt is a subscription data as a service platform, launched in June 2018 and has a MRR of 2,856 USD.
